Ready to get your stories on the page?
This 90-minute micro memoir workshop focuses on your stories, so you can start building your memoir or collection of personal essays/narratives right away. We’ll discuss the micro prose form (300 words or less) and write 3 pieces during our time together.
This workshop's focus: The Family Tree

Ready to climb the family tree? In this workshop, we’ll explore family members both known and unknown, including those who might be hiding out in the branches. We’ll discuss the ways we can tell a personal story that involves others (alive or passed), how permission works, and which family members might have something to say or who have lived lives we want to help remember. You’ll leave with plenty of tools to keep writing and exploring the stories of your family tree.

Meet Your Instructor
I'm Darien Gee, author of five novels published with Penguin Random House (three under the name Mia King) that have been published in 13 countries. I'm a Poetry Society of America fellowship recipient for my prose poetry chapbook, Other Small Histories, and an IPPY award winner for my collection of micro memoirs, Allegiance. I recently served as executive editor for Nonwhite and Woman: 131 Micro Essays on Being in the World, which won a 2023 IPPY award. For the past three years, I was the series editor for a writing and micro memoir publishing company, Haliʻa Aloha. In a past life, I was an international tax manager with a Big Four accounting firm. I live, write, and work from the island of Hawaiʻi.

I teach creative writing at Hugo House and UCLA Extension, and have been leading workshops and working with writers for over 25 years. I love the micro prose form and have seen writers do amazing things with their work. I'm looking forward to see what you can do with it, too!
How does it work?
You'll receive instant access to the workshop recording, classroom, and all resources and downloads. The mood is friendly, focused, and ready to write! Your purchase includes automatic updates to the course as well as invitations to free writing pop-up sessions and quarterly office hours throughout the year.

What can I expect?
You will be actively writing in this workshop. I begin with a check-in and outline the micro memoir format and how/when you can use it, then get us writing. We'll look at examples of micro in the world and explore the theme and how it applies to our work. You’ll leave with 3 micro pieces, plus a craft tip, a downloadable printable, and inspiration to keep you going.

Review the workshop as many times as you like. Each time you'll write something new, even with the same prompts. Many writers have used the same exercises in the workshop to build an entire chapbook or micro prose collection centering around the same theme. Others have integrated their writing into larger hybrid projects or essay collections, or submitted them individually to literary journals.

This workshop is for you if:

you haven't really written before but you're ready to learn
