Ready to get your stories on the page?

This 90-minute micro memoir workshop focuses on your stories, so you can start building your memoir or collection of personal essays/narratives right away. We’ll discuss the micro prose form (300 words or less) and write 3 pieces during our time together.

This workshop's focus: The Kitchen Table
Food is deeply woven into our past, particularly when we gather around the kitchen table. Kitchen tables hold memories of where we were, who we shared meals with, and what we ate. But what do we remember, and what might we have missed? We’ll look at the intersection of consumption, craving, and connection, and how it shapes who we are today.

Meet Your Instructor
I'm Darien Gee, author of five novels published with Penguin Random House (three under the name Mia King) that have been published in 13 countries. I'm a Poetry Society of America fellowship recipient for my prose poetry chapbook, Other Small Histories, and an IPPY award winner for my collection of micro memoirs, Allegiance. I recently served as executive editor for Nonwhite and Woman: 131 Micro Essays on Being in the World, which won a 2023 IPPY award. For the past three years, I was the series editor for a writing and micro memoir publishing company, Haliʻa Aloha. In a past life, I was an international tax manager with a Big Four accounting firm. I live, write, and work from the island of Hawaiʻi.

I teach creative writing at Hugo House and UCLA Extension, and have been leading workshops and working with writers for over 25 years. I love the micro prose form and have seen writers do amazing things with their work. I'm looking forward to see what you can do with it, too!
How does it work?
The course is ready for you to view at your own pace! Your purchase includes automatic updates to the course as well as invitations to free writing pop-up sessions and quarterly office hours throughout the year.

What can I expect?
You will be actively writing in this workshop. I begin with a check-in and outline the micro memoir format and how/when you can use it, then get us writing. You’ll leave with 3 micro pieces, plus a craft tip, a downloadable printable, and inspiration to keep you going. Watch the workshop as many times as you like—each time you'll write something new, even when responding to the same prompts.

Who is this for?
This workshop is for you if:

you haven't really written before but you're ready to learn

you want to tell the stories of your life but don't know how to begin

you have writer's block and need a little push to get the words flowing

you're an experienced writer but ready to play with the micro form

you want to develop a consistent writing practice

you want to explore different ways to tell your story

you'd like to learn organization and structural techniques

you'd like to get some writing done, ASAP!

What do I need to prepare?

Nothing! The mood is friendly, focused, and ready to write. Have a notebook and pen nearby, plenty of water or tea, and get started when you're ready. You can go through the workshop and materials at your own pace.
